Team India Faces Test Series Defeat Threat; Gautam Gambhir Seeks Blessings at Kamakhya Temple

Guwahati: As Team India prepares for the second Test against South Africa, head coach Gautam Gambhir visited the revered Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati to seek divine blessings ahead of the crucial match. The first Test of the series ended in a loss for India, making victory in the second match, starting 22 November at Guwahati’s Barsapara Stadium, imperative to save the series.

Gambhir’s Devotion to Kamakhya Mata

Gautam Gambhir, known for his deep faith, has a long-standing devotion to Maa Kamakhya. He had visited the temple before India’s England tour earlier this year, where the team played a five-match Test series and delivered a strong performance. His visits to the temple have previously coincided with significant cricketing events, including IPL 2024 matches in Guwahati between KKR and Rajasthan Royals, where KKR went on to win the season.

The Kamakhya Temple, located approximately 10 km from Dispur, Assam, is a major Shakti Peeth. Uniquely, the temple does not house any idol or image of the deity. The goddess is worshipped in the form of a natural yoni-shaped kund (sacred pond), and the site is also renowned for tantric practices.

The Series Hangs in the Balance

India’s loss at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in the first Test has put the series at risk. In the final innings, India needed 124 runs to win but managed only 93, falling short of the target. This defeat mirrors India’s home Test series against New Zealand at the end of last year, where New Zealand completed a clean sweep in the three-match series. Gambhir, who was also the head coach then, hopes divine guidance at Kamakhya Mata will inspire the team to a victorious comeback in Guwahati.

With pressure mounting, the second Test is a must-win for Team India to avoid a series loss and restore confidence ahead of future challenges.
