Chhattisgarh Approves 14 New Irrigation Projects; State to Add 1 Lakh Hectares of Irrigation Capacity


Raipur: In a major boost for the agriculture sector, the Chhattisgarh government has approved 14 new irrigation projects, paving the way for a significant expansion of irrigation facilities across the state. The decision was taken during the 33rd meeting of the Chhattisgarh Irrigation Project Board, chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday.

Focus on Boosting Irrigation, Groundwater Levels, and Urban Drinking Water Supply

This was the first meeting of the Board under the present government, where detailed discussions were held on increasing irrigation capacity, improving groundwater levels, and strengthening drinking water supply systems in urban regions. Officials emphasized that the newly approved projects will help address water scarcity and ensure sustainable development across various districts.

Big Relief for Farmers

Officials informed that the government has granted in-principle approval to 14 new irrigation projects across multiple regions of the state.
CM Sai reiterated that enhancing farmers’ income and increasing agricultural output remain top priorities of the government. Expanding the irrigation network is a key step toward achieving these goals.

1 Lakh Hectares of Additional Irrigation Capacity

Authorities revealed that the expansion of irrigated land will not only benefit farmers but also help improve groundwater levels and ensure efficient drinking water supply.
The meeting focused on strengthening irrigation infrastructure in Surguja, Bastar, and the plains. The Chief Minister reviewed the design, cost, and expected benefits of each project and assured that all ongoing and new projects will be accelerated to ensure balanced development across the state.

Through these upcoming projects, the state aims to add approximately 1 lakh hectares of new irrigation capacity.

Projects Approved Across Multiple Districts

The newly sanctioned projects include:

  • Deurgawn Barrage-cum-Lift Irrigation Project, Bastar
  • Matnar Barrage-cum-Lift Irrigation Project, Bastar
  • Mohmela–Sirpur Barrage Project on the Mahanadi, Arang block, Raipur
  • Chaparatola Feeder Reservoir Project, Kota block, Bilaspur
  • Sehgawn Lift Irrigation Scheme, Dhamdha block, Durg
  • Lamti Feeder Reservoir and Canal Construction, Khairagarh–Chhuikhadan–Gandai district
  • Mohara Anicut Water Supply Project through pipeline from Chauki Anicut to Mohara, Rajnandgaon
  • Bagia Barrage-cum-Pressurized Lift Irrigation Scheme on the Maini River, Jashpur
  • Along with several other regional irrigation development projects.

These initiatives aim to strengthen water availability for agriculture, support rural development, and enhance water infrastructure statewide.
