Kanker, Chhattisgarh: Three days after the death of Manish Nishad, a 50-year-old man who had converted to Christianity, his family was denied permission to perform his last rites in the village, escalating tensions between communities. The incident triggered a major stir in the area on Friday.
Family Faces Opposition from Villagers
Manish Nishad’s family brought his body to Charama police station after villagers blocked the vehicle, refusing to allow the burial on local land. Reports indicate that local residents objected because the deceased had converted from Hinduism to Christianity, and there were no Christians previously in the village.
Despite attempts by the police to mediate, villagers did not relent. The family, along with members of the Christian community, initially tried to bury the body in the village, but were forced to take it to the police station when opposition intensified.
Body Taken to Morgue
As tensions escalated, the police shifted the body to the morgue at Kodekurse Hospital. Even three days after his death, the last rites of Manish Nishad could not be performed.
Background of the Deceased
Manish Nishad had been following Christianity for several years. He had been ill for some time and was admitted to a hospital in Raipur, where he passed away on November 4. His family’s intention to bury him in their village met strong resistance from local villagers, leading to the ongoing standoff.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further tension between communities, but the impasse over the burial site has yet to be resolved.
