Shahabad Region Demands Airport; Hopes Rise with NDA Win

Buxar: The Shahabad region of Bihar, spanning Sasaram, Buxar, Kaimur, and Bhojpur, is once again calling for the establishment of an airport. Locals believe that a dedicated airport will accelerate development in the area and improve connectivity. After 19 of the region’s 22 legislators joined the NDA, hopes for the project have increased.

Strategic Location and Need
Situated at the tri-junction of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, Shahabad boasts a strategic location with major national highways passing through Sasaram and Buxar. The area is home to historic landmarks such as Sher Shah Suri’s tomb, Rohtasgarh Fort, and Buxar. Residents currently rely on airports in Patna, Varanasi, or Prayagraj, often spending more time reaching these airports than traveling to their destinations.

Public Expectations from Upendra Kushwaha
During a public gathering in Sasaram on Sunday, local businessman Prabhat Kumar appealed to RLM leader Upendra Kushwaha and newly elected MLA Snehlata Kushwaha to push for the establishment of an airport at Suyara. Kushwaha assured that officials are preparing a master plan, and a formal announcement would follow. A district official added that the state has already acquired land in Suyara suitable for aviation purposes and for an industrial corridor.

Support from Businesses, Professionals, and Citizens
Businessman Shyam Ji Gupta highlighted the proximity of Buxar to the Uttar Pradesh border, making it ideal for a regional airport serving two states. He noted that the airport would benefit industries in Dehri-on-Sone and local stone mining sectors. Dr. Shweta Kumari from Darigaon said, “Thousands of students and laborers travel to major cities every month.” Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, a physician from Sasaram, added, “A runway here could transform our region’s prospects.” Advocate Divyansh Singh from Dumraon shared that he has written to the Union Civil Aviation Minister urging inclusion of Buxar Airport in the flight plan.

Online Campaigns and Civic Pressure
Former Dumraon estate manager Manavijay Singh noted that Bihar is already planning new airports in Virpur, Valmikinagar, Saharsa, Madhubani, Bhagalpur, and Muzaffarpur, with Darbhanga achieving rapid success and Purnia recently approved. Despite its central location and economic potential, Shahabad has remained overlooked. Young groups, business bodies, and civil society organizations have been running online campaigns advocating for airports in Buxar, Sasaram, or Dehri, further raising public awareness and pressure.

With political backing and strong public support, the push for an airport in Shahabad is gaining momentum, and locals are optimistic about future connectivity and regional growth.
